Hotels, restaurants, bars, resorts and other hospitality businesses eventually face the same question: should we build marketing in-house or work with an agency?
There is no universal answer. Both models can work. The better choice depends on the stage of the business, the skills you need and whether one person can realistically cover everything marketing now requires.
When an in-house marketing team makes sense
An internal marketer can be valuable when the business needs someone close to day-to-day operations.
That is especially useful when marketing depends heavily on:
- daily promotions and venue activity;
- fast coordination with operations, sales or reservations;
- regular content capture;
- internal brand management; and
- constant communication between departments.
The limitation is usually range. One person may understand social media well but not paid search, SEO, website conversion, analytics, PR, automation and creative production at the same level.
When a marketing agency makes more sense
An agency becomes useful when the business needs access to several disciplines without hiring a full internal team.
That might include strategy, advertising, search visibility, creative, content, website work, data and campaign management at the same time.
An external team can also bring distance. People inside a business naturally become used to how things are done. Someone outside may spot gaps in the customer journey, positioning or marketing that have become normal internally.
But an agency is not automatically the better choice. If it does not understand the business, cannot move quickly or only reports on activity instead of commercial outcomes, the relationship can become expensive without being useful.
For many hospitality businesses, the hybrid model is stronger
A practical middle ground is to keep someone internally who understands the operation while using an external partner for specialist capability and broader strategy.
This avoids expecting one employee to become an expert in every marketing discipline while still keeping marketing connected to the business.
How to decide
Before hiring either, look at the actual gap.
- If execution is the problem: you may need a strong internal marketer.
- If specialist capability is missing: an agency or external partner may be more efficient.
- If both are missing: a hybrid structure may give the business the strongest coverage.
- If nobody can clearly explain the marketing problem: start with strategy before adding more people or channels.
The structure can also change over time. A business may use an agency while building internal capability, or keep an internal team and bring in specialists only when needed.

Explore hospitality marketing services →The simple answer
If your hospitality business needs one person close to the operation every day, in-house may be the right place to start.
If you need several capabilities at once, an external team can give you broader expertise without building a full department.
And if the business is growing, the answer may be both.
